Credit Union Participation Market: 2026 Outlook

The credit union loan participation market continues to grow as CUs look for ways to deploy excess liquidity and diversify beyond their geographic footprint. Based on NCUA call report data and our CRM intelligence covering 4,200+ credit unions, here is what we see heading into Q2 2026.

Solar loan participations remain the dominant asset class by volume. Credit unions with excess deposits and a mandate to support clean energy have been active buyers. Pricing has tightened - OAS on newly originated solar pools is running 90-120bp over Treasuries, down from 130-160bp a year ago. The compression reflects both increased buyer appetite and lower default expectations as the sector seasons.

Auto participations - both direct and indirect - are the second largest category. Indirect auto (dealer-originated) participations carry higher yields but also higher default risk. LoanBook's Default Model v3.0 shows peak CDR for indirect auto at approximately 3.5-4.0% around month 18, versus 1.5-2.0% for direct auto. That default differential is worth 40-60bp of OAS.

Home improvement and marine participations are niche but growing. Home improvement benefits from the collateral (the improvement becomes part of the property), while marine is higher-yielding but concentrated among fewer originators.

What CU buyers should watch: concentration risk. NCUA examiners are increasingly focused on participation concentration - both by originator and by asset class. A credit union with 30%+ of its loan portfolio in participations from a single originator will face examination scrutiny regardless of credit performance.

What CU sellers should watch: documentation. Buyers are demanding more granular loan tapes, performance data, and servicing transparency. The days of selling a pool with a one-page summary are over. LoanBook's standard loan tape format gives buyers the data they need for independent credit analysis.

For pricing, the LoanBook OAS engine with live CU rate data provides real-time spread decomposition: Z-Spread, OAS, option cost, and credit cost. This gives both sides of the trade a transparent, model-based framework for negotiation.
